Two words on a form
You are the tenant volunteer who assigns the four parking spots beside the elevator in your building's garage.
Last month you gave the last elevator spot to Taylor, 29, who applied first on a form posted in the lobby; it asked only for a reason, he wrote 'health reasons,' and you didn't ask anything more. Kiri, 74, walks with a cane and parks at the far end of the garage. She has stopped you both beside the elevator door.
The scene
Kiri: I never saw any form or rule. Nobody told me spots were even open.
Taylor: It was posted in the lobby. I filled it out honestly and waited.
Kiri: And two words on a form settled it? Why did that count?
Taylor: You set it up. Fix it going forward, but don't take my spot now.
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the current assignment, and what would you say to Kiri and Taylor?
- 2How do you decide whether to fix an unfair process by changing past decisions or only future ones?
