Scene to read · Equity, Self-awareness
Who counts as family?
You are a volunteer greeter at a hospital, stationed at the entrance to the family waiting room.
Claribel, 31, is a visitor who has walked up to the door; she is a longtime neighbor and the only person supporting a patient upstairs. Claudius, 44, the volunteer coordinator, stands beside you. The sign reads Family Only, and staff were told to enforce it. You usually greet people at this door.
The scene
Claribel: I've lived next door to him for twenty years. Nobody else is coming for him.
Claudius: Sorry, Claribel. Staff were told to keep this room for family only.
Claribel: I only need a quiet chair close by. The general area is so far.
Claudius: If we bend it for one person, others will ask. You're the greeter.
The two questions
- 1What would you do at this door, and what would you say to Claribel and to Claudius?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to bend a rule to fit a person's real circumstances?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
