Fifteen minutes late
You volunteer on the patient advisory council of a community health clinic.
The clinic cancels any appointment when the patient is more than fifteen minutes late. Staff say the rule is the only thing that keeps the day on schedule, so that patients who arrive on time are not left waiting for hours. The clinic's own records show that most canceled appointments belong to patients who depend on two bus routes that often run late. Usha, a council member who rides one of those buses, says she has been turned away twice. The council wants your recommendation: keep the rule, change it for everyone, or allow exceptions.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend, and why?
- 2When is making an exception to a rule fairer than applying it to everyone in the same way?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
