Teasing as a welcome

You are helping cook holiday dinner in your parents' kitchen.

It's holiday dinner prep in your parents' kitchen, and your aunt Frances has joked several times about the turban worn by Harjit, your sister's fiancé, who has stepped out into the yard. Your father, Mateo, is at the stove; Harjit hasn't said a word about the jokes to anyone.

The scene

Frances: Does he take that thing off for dessert, or is it staying?

Mateo: Let it go today. I'd guess he'd hate a fuss made over him.

Frances: Oh, I'm only teasing. In my family, teasing is how newcomers know they belong.

Mateo: He's back any second. Please, don't start anything in front of him.

The two questions

  1. 1What, if anything, would you say right now, and to whom?
  2. 2How do you decide when to speak up for someone who hasn't asked you to?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
