Scene to read · Equity, Resilience

Her cat, our rule

You are the volunteer moderator of a neighborhood forum, and you enforce its English-only rule.

In the community garden shed, a laptop shows the forum. Severin, a member, posted in Portuguese about a lost cat and was told to translate it. Sidonie, a longtime member, backs the rule. A few members have publicly called it exclusionary and want you replaced.

The scene

Severin: My cat post got flagged. Many neighbors read Portuguese, and she's still missing.

Sidonie: Rules only work when they apply to everyone. Otherwise nobody can check posts.

Severin: People are calling the rule exclusionary online. Will you keep enforcing it?

Sidonie: Bend it once and every post becomes a dispute. Your call, though.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do about the rule and Severin's post, and what would you say to both of them?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to keep doing a difficult job while people criticized how you were doing it.

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
