Scene to read · Equity, Communication
Before Friday
You started this week at the front desk of an apartment complex leasing office.
An elderly tenant who speaks little English is two months behind on rent, and the owner's notice deadline is Friday. Your manager, Sanjay, wants to meet her tomorrow with her grandson, a middle schooler, translating. Your coworker Feng wants to wait for a paid phone interpreter, which takes days to approve. You keep the calendar.
The scene
Sanjay: She asked for him herself. Wait, and Friday passes. Then it's the lawyers.
Feng: A kid shouldn't have to tell his grandmother she might lose her home.
Sanjay: I'd rather she hear it gently tomorrow than from a court notice.
Feng: Or he gets one word wrong and she signs something. Which goes on the calendar?
The two questions
- 1What would you put on the calendar, and what would you say to Sanjay and Feng?
- 2When is a quick, imperfect way of including someone good enough, and when is it not?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
