The room with a door
You are hosting relatives over a holiday.
Weeks ago you promised your brother Emre the only bedroom on your home's ground floor, because his baby wakes often and it is the quietest room. Yesterday your aunt Oksana, whose knee operation makes climbing hard, said she is coming as well. Both have stopped by to help you get ready, and stand in the hallway outside that room.
The scene
Oksana: I won't push a baby out. But a whole flight, with this knee?
Emre: Up there, the baby wakes everyone at two. And you promised us weeks ago.
Oksana: I could take the sofa bed, though I'd have no door to close.
Emre: Nobody wants that either. You're the host. Who gets the room?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Emre and Oksana?
- 2When is it fair to go back on a promise because someone else's need turned out to be greater?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
