Hosting for once
You are the third sibling, coordinating this year's holiday plan for your family.
In their parents' kitchen, your siblings Isadora, 56, who has no children, and Inigo, 43, who has a baby and a young child, are planning the holidays. For years Isadora has traveled six hours to the parents' house. Your parents have said they will go along with whatever you three settle on.
The scene
Isadora: I've driven here every holiday for years. This year, could I host?
Inigo: In theory, yes. But travelling with two very young children is brutal.
Isadora: And driving six hours alone every year hasn't been? I have plans.
Inigo: So our kids suffer for fairness? You're coordinating, so what's your call?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Isadora and Inigo, and what would you propose?
- 2Describe a time you had to balance fairness with someone's real hardship. What did you decide, and why?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
