Who gets the nine o'clock

You are a volunteer board member of a community soccer league, and you decide how the game times are assigned.

At a table beside the field, league scheduler Edson and team captain Eero are talking before the board vote. The 9 p.m. games are hard for players with caregiving duties or early shifts, and the same few teams keep getting them. Teams with long standing have earned the early times.

The scene

Edson: Eero, the same four teams keep getting exhausting 9 p.m. games.

Eero: My team waited three years for early slots; seniority should count.

Edson: Those players miss games because of childcare duties and morning shifts.

Eero: Then rotate if you must, but my players won't be happy.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide about the late slots, and why?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to accept an inconvenient arrangement for the sake of a group. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
