Scene to read · Equity, Collaboration
One-forty or eight weeks
You are the volunteer commissioner of an adult recreational soccer league with about two hundred players.
The city has doubled the field rent, and the board has left the decision to you: raise the season fee from ninety dollars to one-forty, or keep it and shorten the season from twelve weeks to eight. At the registration table, Beatrix, the treasurer, and Araceli, a team captain, are waiting.
The scene
Araceli: At one-forty, half my team's gone. Keep it ninety and play eight weeks.
Beatrix: So two hundred players lose a month of soccer? Most would rather pay.
Araceli: Most can. That's my point.
Beatrix: I print the fee sheets tonight. Commissioner, which is it, one-forty or eight weeks?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and what would you say to Araceli and Beatrix?
- 2When a change is good for most of a group but shuts a few people out, how should the group decide?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
