Matching jerseys

You sit on the board of a city adult softball league.

The board is voting on whether every team must buy matching official jerseys next season. The league's sponsors want them and have hinted that their support depends on it, and umpires say matching shirts make games easier to run. The jerseys cost more than some players can comfortably pay. Bushra, who captains a team from a lower-income neighborhood, says three teams like hers may drop out. Sponsor money is what keeps the fields and the registration fees affordable for everyone. The board asks for your recommendation.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend the board do, and why?
  2. 2When does a rule that treats everyone the same end up treating people unequally?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
