Written scenario · Equity, Problem solving

Three years out of town

You are the student representative on a regional hospital's tuition-aid committee.

The committee is voting today on a proposal that every funded graduate spend their first three years at small outlying clinics that can't keep staff. Two of those clinics cut their opening hours this year. Several current recipients care for family members in the city or have no car. Your classmate Aarti, who looks after her grandmother, has told you she'd give up the aid rather than move. You can back the requirement, oppose it, or propose another way to staff those clinics.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you vote, and what, if anything, would you propose to the committee?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to make a decision knowing someone would lose out whichever way you chose. How did you handle it?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
