Written scenario · Equity, Ethics

Three ways to choose

You are the community volunteer on a hospital's patient advisory council.

The hospital will receive a very small supply of an expensive new treatment for a rare, life-threatening condition, and far more families are hoping for it than there are doses. The hospital has asked the council which way of sharing it seems fairest to the community: first come, first served; a random lottery; or priority for the patients doctors expect to gain the most. Each option leaves some families without it. Dylan, a father whose daughter is on the list, will be in the room when you speak.

The two questions

  1. 1Which approach would you recommend, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to share something limited among people who all had a real need for it. How did you decide?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
