Your envelope

You volunteer on the dock at a rowing club's regattas.

After a masters regatta, an older rower pressed an envelope into your hand to thank you for finding his missing oar before his race; it holds two hundred dollars. Five other volunteers worked the dock all day beside you. On the dock, fellow volunteer Beatriz and the club captain, Leila, have both seen it.

The scene

Beatriz: Six of us were out here since five. That should be split six ways.

Leila: He picked one person and said thank you. A personal gift is personal.

Beatriz: He only knew one face. The rest of us carried his boat.

Leila: And if we pool every thank-you, people stop giving them. It's your envelope.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do with the envelope, and why?
  2. 2When you are rewarded for something a group did together, what do you owe the others?
