Scene to read · Equity, Problem solving

Four hundred a month

You share a home with your partner, Ibrahim, whose adult son lives with you.

Ibrahim's son has lived with you rent-free for a year while he retrains. Your own son, Howard, paid you rent when he lived at home, a rule you set before Ibrahim moved in. On a visit, Howard notices the household budget spread across the living room table.

The scene

Howard: So nobody's paying rent on that room? I paid four hundred a month.

Ibrahim: You had a salary, Howard. He's retraining with nothing coming in.

Howard: I was on minimum wage. I'm not angry. I just noticed it.

Ibrahim: That rule was yours, from before my time. Should my son pay now?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Howard and Ibrahim?
  2. 2When is treating two people differently fair, and when is it favoritism?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
