Scene to read · Equity, Communication

Same blue

You are captain of a beach volleyball team in a local league.

Minutes before your tournament match, the league referee, Tanvi, stops your teammate Eleanor at the court. Eleanor wears a long-sleeve top and leggings for religious modesty, in the team's color but not the team uniform. League rules say partners must wear matching uniforms so officials can tell the teams apart. A uniformed substitute is ready.

The scene

Tanvi: The rule is matching uniforms. I can't tell teams apart at the net otherwise.

Eleanor: It's the same blue. I've played all season dressed like this.

Tanvi: Nobody checked all season. Argue it and we start late, or use your substitute.

Eleanor: Captain, please don't sub me out over sleeves.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Tanvi and Eleanor?
  2. 2When should a rule that is applied to everyone the same way be adjusted for one person?

What raters look for
