Page three

You are the data analyst at a small online marketplace for handmade goods.

Your test of a new search ranking shows company revenue up twelve percent, with one-person shops falling far down the results. By the office dashboard, your manager, Akiko, wants to launch tomorrow. Albert, from seller support, objects.

The scene

Albert: Those one-person shops built this site. Page three means half their sales, gone.

Akiko: Buyers find more they want. And without this revenue, we cut staff in spring.

Albert: We could cap the drop, or phase it in over months.

Akiko: That costs most of the gain. You ran the test. Do I approve it tomorrow?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend to Akiko, and why?
  2. 2When a change helps most people but falls hardest on a small group, what is owed to that group?

What raters look for
