Scene to read · Equity, Communication

Just easier

You share a house with four others, including Fernanda and the newest housemate, Mosi.

Mosi moved in two weeks ago and asked everyone to use that name instead of the one printed on the lease, without saying why. The housemates are labeling fridge shelves in the kitchen. Fernanda has just written the lease name on Mosi's shelf.

The scene

Fernanda: There. I used the lease name. It's just easier, it matches the mail.

Mosi: Oh. I mean, I did ask. But it's only a shelf. It's okay.

Fernanda: See? No big deal. I'll never remember two names anyway.

Mosi: Sure. Whatever's simplest for everyone. Can someone pass the tape?

The two questions

  1. 1Would you say something now, later, or not at all? What would you say?
  2. 2When is it better to speak up for someone in the moment, and when is it better to check with them first?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Communication
