Scene to read · Equity, Empathy

Consent is consent

You work at a small charity that supports newly arrived families.

A client, Mrs. Tran, signed a consent form for her photo and story to appear on the fundraising page. You were with her and doubt she understood where it would be shown. In the office, the director, Wendell, and Dewi, who runs the page, are about to publish.

The scene

Dewi: Her story's ready to post. It's the strongest one we've had all year.

Wendell: And she signed. We use the form so we never guess for clients.

Dewi: Though she did sign in about ten seconds. You were with her, weren't you?

Wendell: Consent is consent. Second-guessing her isn't respect either. Unless you saw something?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Wendell and Dewi?
  2. 2What makes someone's agreement meaningful, beyond a signature?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
