Different prices
You sit on the parent advisory board of a nonprofit community music school.
The school charges every family the same fee, and most of its students come from families who could afford lessons elsewhere. The director proposes income-based fees: lower-income families would pay much less, and higher-income families would pay more than they do now. At the board meeting, several families who would pay more say it is unfair to charge them extra for the same lesson.

The two questions
- 1What factors should the board consider before deciding?
- 2Is it fair to charge different people different prices for the same service? Explain your view.
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
