Written scenario · Equity, Communication

Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings

You chair the tenants' association of a 60-unit apartment building.

Members are voting on a permanent monthly meeting time. The vote is tied between Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings, so your vote as chair decides it. Evenings suit most members and have always drawn the biggest turnout. They also shut out everyone who works nights, including Analyn, a hospital cleaner who has tracked the building's repair requests for years and jokes that she will keep running things by sticky note. Saturday mornings would lose the families with weekend sports and, the one time it was tried, drew half the usual attendance.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you vote, and how would you explain it to the members?
  2. 2When a decision suits most people but shuts a few out, how do you decide what the group owes those few?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
Communication
Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
