Written scenario · Equity, Motivation
Years of training or hours worked
You are the student representative on a regional hospital's pay review panel.
You are in the boardroom for the hospital's annual pay review. One proposal would widen the pay gap for roles that need many extra years of training, which the hospital is struggling to fill. The other would base pay mainly on hours worked, so a long shift counts the same for everyone. Mala, a porter supervisor with thirty years at the hospital, says support staff on the longest shifts have been undervalued for years. Both arguments hold up. The budget covers only one, and the chair turns to you for a recommendation.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to the panel, and why?
- 2How do you think society should decide what different kinds of work are worth?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
