Scene to read · Equity, Professionalism
Start them now?
You run the grill and the window by yourself at a sidewalk lunch cart.
It is just after noon downtown. Vikram, whose weekly order for his whole office is the cart's biggest sale and biggest tip, has come to the side window. Daniela is at the front of a line of nine. The cart's phone, which Vikram normally uses to order ahead, has been dead all week.
The scene
Vikram: Twelve lunches, same as every Thursday. My meeting's at one. Start them now?
Daniela: I've been in this line fifteen minutes. My break ends in ten.
Vikram: I'd have called ahead, but your phone's been dead all week.
Daniela: That's not on any of us back here. We all waited.
The two questions
- 1Whose order would you start first, and what would you say to Vikram and Daniela?
- 2When, if ever, is it fair for a business to treat its best customers differently from everyone else?
What raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
