Written scenario · Equity, Ethics

Signed up by phone

You work part time as a clerk at a neighborhood pharmacy.

A new vaccine has arrived: sixty for a waitlist binder holding two hundred names. The list is in sign-up order, and most early names came through the online form on the first morning. Many older, homebound customers signed up days later by phone because they could not use the form. Shreya, the manager, must decide tonight who gets called. She says people were promised first come, first served, yet the latecomers are the ones the vaccine was mainly meant for. She asks what you would do.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend to Shreya, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it fair to change the order of a waiting list after people have joined it?

What raters look for

Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
