Just an address
You work the register at a lighthouse gift shop.
Your close friend Koji spent a week painting a man's porch and was never paid; the man no longer answers his phone. Koji knows he ordered a custom sign here, and the binder holding customers' home addresses sits by your register. Your coworker Beverly is pricing mugs beside you.
The scene
Koji: He owes me nine hundred dollars. I just need his address for small claims.
Beverly: Nobody ever checks who opens that binder. I look things up constantly.
Koji: I've got no other way to find him. Rent's due Friday.
Beverly: I'd do it for a friend. It's just an address.
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Koji, and why?
- 2Does a good reason for wanting someone's private information change whether you should give it?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
