Scene to read · Ethics, Resilience
Before the fabric sells out
You work at a curtain shop, where an absent customer has authorized you to choose replacement fabric on her behalf.
At closing, colleague Ayelet, 34, and manager Balthazar, 47, compare the customer's old swatch with two accurately labeled fabric batches. One looks closer under shop lights; daylight comparison isn't possible until morning. The customer wants a close match but also needs curtains promptly. Neither batch can be reserved overnight, and cut fabric is nonreturnable, though uncut purchases can be exchanged if stock remains.
The scene
Ayelet: This batch looks closer here. Buying now could protect her delivery date.
Balthazar: Daylight might change that comparison. Waiting could spare her an expensive mismatch.
Ayelet: She authorized us to choose, and either batch could sell out tonight.
Balthazar: We could buy it uncut, but exchanging later might delay her curtains.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and what would you do before and after deciding?
- 2How do you decide when you must act for someone else without being sure what they would choose?
What raters look for
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
