Refusing a blood transfusion

You are Rosa's closest friend and the emergency contact on her hospital forms.

Your friend Rosa, 58, is unconscious after a car accident and needs surgery. In her wallet is a signed card, dated twelve years ago, refusing blood transfusions on religious grounds. Two years ago she stopped attending her congregation, but she never told you whether her view on transfusions changed. The surgeon says the operation is much riskier without blood and asks you what you believe Rosa would want. Her adult son, on the phone from overseas, says she would want to live.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you tell the surgeon, and why?
  2. 2How should you decide for someone who cannot speak for themselves?

A sample answer, and how to improve it

A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 6 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 7.5, with the reason for each change.
