Scene to read · Ethics, Communication

From the returns bay

You are in your first week at a furniture store, training under Pavel, the senior salesperson who will write your probation review.

On the showroom floor, Pavel is showing a customer, Ren, the display sofa. Yesterday you saw one just like it wheeled in from the returns bay, but you cannot be sure it is the same piece, and the return log is locked in the manager's office until tomorrow. The sale price ends tonight.

The scene

Pavel: Brand new. Unboxed it myself on Monday. Sale price ends tonight.

Ren: It's for my mother, so I'm fussy. Could your colleague check it's never been used?

Pavel: Go ahead, look it over. Forty years, I know a new sofa.

Ren: No offense meant. So, what do you think? Should I put my card down?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Ren, and to Pavel?
  2. 2How sure do you need to be before you voice a doubt about a colleague's word?
