Scene to read · Motivation, Equity

Twenty years of Saturdays

You have volunteered at a community food pantry for six years.

At the pantry's volunteer appreciation dinner, the year's award has just gone to the Hendersons, a couple who made a large donation. Beside you is Mona, who has volunteered every Saturday for twenty years. Agnieszka, the pantry's director, who assigns all volunteer roles, crosses the hall toward you.

The scene

Mona: Twenty years of Saturdays, and the award goes to a checkbook. I'm done.

Agnieszka: Photo with the Hendersons, both of you! Their gift keeps our doors open.

Mona: You go. I'll get my coat.

Agnieszka: Is something wrong? I need my longest-serving volunteers in this one.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Mona and to Agnieszka?
  2. 2Describe a time your effort, or someone else's, went unrecognized. How did it affect your motivation, and what did you do?

What raters look for

Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
