Scene to read · Motivation, Self-awareness

Four hundred coded folders

You are a trumpet player in a community brass band, staying after practice to discuss taking over its music library.

In the rehearsal hall, Emrys, 26, is stepping down as the band's volunteer music librarian, and Ender, 39, is the band leader. They ask you to take over the unpaid role, which takes hours each week and receives little recognition. Four hundred folders use labels only Emrys understands; without a handover before fall, the band could struggle to find its scores.

The scene

Emrys: I'm the only one who knows what these folder labels mean.

Ender: It's a lot of work and could cut into your practice time.

Emrys: I can help you learn the system before I leave this summer.

Ender: We need someone by fall, but could you manage it with help?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Emrys and Ender, and what would you want to settle before answering?
  2. 2How do you decide when to take on necessary work that you would not choose to do for enjoyment?

What raters look for

Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
Self-awareness
