Forty members, then nine
You are the founder and president of a film photography club.
Six years ago you started a club where members develop their own prints and critique them together. Membership has fallen from forty to nine, and dues no longer cover the darkroom rent. A larger photography society has offered a merger: your members would get its studio and funding, but your club's name, the weekly print critiques and the darkroom would go. Chanthou, a member since the first year, tells you she would rather the club end as itself than be absorbed. Three newer members say they just want somewhere to keep shooting. The offer expires this month.
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you involve the remaining members?
- 2When does persevering with something you built become holding on to it for your own sake?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
