Scene to read · Motivation, Professionalism
After the spring season
You are a member of a small film society.
You joined two years ago simply to watch films. Elsa, who has kept the society going as president for eleven years, taught you to thread its old projector. In the projection booth after tonight's screening, with Yumi, another member, rewinding beside you, Elsa has an announcement.
The scene
Elsa: I'm done after spring. I'm worn out. I'd like you to take over.
Yumi: Don't look at me. She's asked everyone. Nobody else will touch the paperwork.
Elsa: You're the only one who knows the projector. That's partly why I showed you.
Yumi: And if nobody takes it, we fold in June. No pressure. Well, some.
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Elsa?
- 2Describe a time you were asked to take on a responsibility you had not sought. How did you decide?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
