Would a card change anything?

You have volunteered for four years in a library's adult reading program.

The number of volunteer tutors has dropped by half this year. In the library meeting room, the coordinator, Anita, proposes giving each volunteer a twenty-dollar gift card every month. Ansel, who has volunteered for a decade, objects.

What's said in the scene

Anita: We've lost half our tutors. A small gift card each month might keep people coming.

Ansel: Pay people and it becomes a job. That's not why we're here.

Anita: Good intentions aren't filling Tuesday nights, Ansel.

Ansel: Ask someone who shows up every week. Would a card change anything?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer, and what would you suggest to Anita and Ansel?
  2. 2Can a reward weaken someone's reasons for doing something they already care about? Explain.
