Scene to read · Motivation, Collaboration

A hobby, not a job

You play second violin in a community orchestra and share a music stand with Naoko.

The concert is in two weeks. Naoko, 75, rarely practices between rehearsals. Backstage after tonight's rehearsal, the section leader, Dalit, stops you both.

The scene

Dalit: Naoko, the fast passage fell apart at your stand again tonight.

Naoko: I worked fifty years, dear. This is my hobby. I come here for joy.

Dalit: This hobby has a paying audience in two weeks.

Naoko: My stand partner hears me best. Tell us, am I really the problem?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Naoko and Dalit?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you and a teammate wanted different things from the same activity. How did you work together?
