The last walkers
You are a volunteer at a water station near the end of a charity marathon.
You signed up to stay until the last participant passed. Heavy rain has put the event two hours behind, and about a dozen walkers are still out. You also promised your grandfather you would be at his birthday dinner at six. Josefina, the station captain, and Katarzyna, another volunteer, are stacking cups.
The scene
Katarzyna: My ride's here, so I'm off. Those last walkers are an hour away.
Josefina: You can go too, honestly. Nobody planned on this rain. I'll manage the table.
Katarzyna: One of them's walking for her late husband. She told me at the start.
Josefina: And I can't lift those jugs alone. But go, if you need to.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2Describe a time you kept going with a commitment after the reason or reward for it had faded. What kept you there?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
