Required to volunteer
You are a recent graduate of a high school that is reviewing its graduation requirements.
The school requires every student to complete 40 hours of community service to graduate. Some teachers argue the requirement teaches students to value helping others. A group of current students argues that forced volunteering just produces box-checking and resentment. The school has asked recent graduates, including you, for input.

The two questions
- 1Do you think mandatory community service builds a genuine commitment to helping others? Explain.
- 2Describe an experience of helping others that changed why you do it.
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
