Sixty saplings left

You are a volunteer at a riverbank tree-planting day.

About half the volunteers posed with shovels for an hour and then left; sixty saplings are still in their pots. Gideon, who has been digging beside you all morning, stops the coordinator, Trevor, as he passes.

The scene

Gideon: Half of them planted one tree, took thirty photos and went to brunch.

Trevor: And those photos paid for every sapling here. Donors give when they see crowds.

Gideon: Then at least ask them to stay. The rest of us are wrecked.

Trevor: Ask and they stop coming. You've been quiet. Would you say something to them?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Trevor, and what, if anything, would you do about it?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you did the unglamorous part of a job while others got the credit. What kept you going?
