Off tonight's agenda
You are chairing tonight's meeting of a public speaking club.
Casey joined the club to prepare for the toast at her daughter's wedding next month, and she has already postponed her first speech twice. Before the meeting starts, she and her mentor, Nandini, come to you at the lectern, where you are holding the agenda.
The scene
Casey: Please take me off tonight. My hands are shaking. Next meeting, I promise.
Nandini: Let her skip. Push people before they're ready and they never come back.
Casey: I know the wedding's in four weeks. I know that.
Nandini: You'll get there, Casey. Chair, it's your agenda. On or off?
The two questions
- 1What would you say to Casey and Nandini, and what would you do with the agenda?
- 2Describe a time someone encouraged you, or you encouraged someone, to do something frightening. What made the difference?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
