Done in twenty minutes
You fix bikes on Saturday mornings at a community repair co-op.
The co-op lets its mechanics choose their repairs. For three weeks Petra, the most experienced, has said she would walk you through a wheel rebuild, and today is her last shift before a two-month trip. You have patched five flats this morning while she works on a wheel. Lourdes, a customer, wheels her bike up to the workstand.
The scene
Lourdes: Hi, sorry. My back tire's flat, and I start work at ten.
Petra: That one's yours. Flats go to the newer mechanics, I'm on the wheel.
Lourdes: I don't mind who does it. I can't be late again.
Petra: I did say I'd show you. But I'll be done in twenty minutes. Take the flat?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Petra?
- 2Describe a time you were given the dull part of a shared job. How did you keep yourself motivated?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
