Trading headphones for the stage
You are the volunteer who trained Gabin and now handles backstage props.
In an amateur theatre company's backstage corridor, Gabin, 53, the sound operator, is talking with Galina, 66, the director. Auditions open next week, and Gabin has quietly wanted to act for years. Gabin is the only available sound operator: your props duties overlap with performances, and no replacement has been trained.
The scene
Gabin: After years running sound, Galina, I'd like to audition this season.
Galina: I understand, Gabin, but without someone covering sound, we'd struggle with performances.
Gabin: I'll help train someone, but I can't keep putting auditions off forever.
Galina: With your props commitments, could you help us plan a workable handover?
The two questions
- 1What would you say or suggest to Gabin and Galina, and why?
- 2How do you decide when a volunteer's personal goals should take priority over a group's needs?
What raters look for
- Motivation
- Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
