Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy
Her handwritten cue sheets
You are the volunteer stage manager for a community theater, and the director has asked you to decide how cues will run on opening night.
Backstage, two days before opening, Marjolaine, the theater's founder, and Massimo, the new director, stand by the prompt desk. Her handwritten cue system has caused two missed cues in rehearsals. As stage manager, you control which system the crew uses.
The scene
Marjolaine: My handwritten sheets served thirty years, Massimo; the crew knows them.
Massimo: I respect that, Marjolaine, but two cues missed; opening is Friday.
Marjolaine: Rehearse more. Don't discard what built this theater over two slips.
Massimo: We can't agree. You run the desk; which system will you use?
The two questions
- 1What would you do about the cue system before opening night, and what would you say to Marjolaine and Massimo?
- 2Describe a time you had to change or defend an established way of doing things. What did you weigh, and what happened?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
