Scene to read · Professionalism, Ethics

Dinner before the last report

You are a graduate teaching assistant who leads this chemistry lab section and grades every report from it.

Your chemistry section has just ended. Alan, a student you grade, has been friendly with you all semester and lingers at your bench. Alma, a fellow teaching assistant, wipes down the next bench within earshot. Alan's final report is ungraded, the coordinator is away until after finals, and Alan flies home when finals end.

The scene

Alan: Would you have dinner with me Saturday? Just us, not the usual group.

Alma: I'm right here, so I'll say it. Just tell the coordinator you're going.

Alan: I'd happily tell her. But she's away, and I fly out after finals.

Alma: Then it's your call, and you grade his last report this week.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Alan right now, with Alma listening?
  2. 2When, if ever, is something that is technically allowed still the wrong choice for someone in a position of trust?
