The saws do not forgive
You sit on the volunteer board of a community makerspace.
Robin, the makerspace's most skilled furniture maker, has taught the required machine-safety course for nine years and alone decides who gets certified. Nobody she certified has ever been seriously hurt. Several new members have told you privately that her impatience makes them afraid to ask questions, and two have quietly dropped the course. Robin says the saws do not forgive hesitation and that she will not sign off on anyone who seems unsure. The board has asked for your recommendation on whether she should keep teaching the course and what, if anything, should change.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to the board, and how would you raise it with Robin?
- 2When, if ever, should a person's skill or track record excuse the way they treat the people they teach?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
