Scene to read · Professionalism, Equity
What goes in the minutes
You are the secretary of a local birdwatching society, and you are about to write up tonight's minutes.
After the monthly meeting, you sit in the society's meeting room with the president, Errol, and a member, Eulalia. The room was tense when members voted on a new rule for field trips. Eulalia's objection was cut off during the discussion, and the minutes are the only official record future members will read.
The scene
Errol: Could we leave the argument out? The rule passed, and everyone's calmer.
Eulalia: I was talked over. If my objection isn't recorded, it's as if I never spoke.
Errol: I'm not erasing you. I just don't want old tension reopened at the next meeting.
Eulalia: Then write down what I actually said. You decide how it's worded.
The two questions
- 1What would you put in the minutes, and what would you say to Errol and Eulalia?
- 2How should someone who keeps an official record balance accuracy against keeping a group on good terms?
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
