Scene to read · Professionalism, Empathy

Thirty in cash

You are a personal trainer employed by a gym.

The gym's policy bans trainers from taking private payment from members. Dolores, your client of two years, can no longer afford the gym's session price. On the gym floor, she makes you an offer as another trainer, Zane, walks by.

The scene

Dolores: I can't afford sixty a session anymore. Thirty in cash, at the park?

Zane: Half of us do it. The gym takes most of that sixty anyway.

Dolores: Otherwise I have to stop, and I've come so far.

Zane: She wins, you win. Who's it hurting?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Dolores?
  2. 2Does it matter whether you follow a workplace rule when breaking it seems to harm no one? Explain.

What raters look for

Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
