Scene to read · Professionalism, Equity

Named or nameless feedback

You are the elected class representative, meeting two classmates in a student union meeting room to decide how to raise a concern.

Several classmates, mostly international students, say the oral-exam grading feels inconsistent. Ainhoa, 24, wants to be named when you raise it with the instructor. Ainsley, 37, fears retaliation and wants it kept anonymous. The decision about how to raise it is yours.

The scene

Ainhoa: Name me. The instructor can easily dismiss an anonymous complaint outright.

Ainsley: Easy for you. Naming us risks retaliation when marks come out.

Ainhoa: Nothing changes otherwise. Others scored lower for identical answers; I have evidence.

Ainsley: I'm not risking my grade. You're the representative, so you choose.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Ainhoa and Ainsley?
  2. 2How do you decide when feedback on behalf of a group should name individuals and when it should stay anonymous?

What raters look for

Professionalism
Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
