A branch with no future
You are a teller at a credit union.
You are locking up with Saoirse, the other teller, when Nikau, the branch manager, walks over from the vault. He wants someone to run evening sign-ups for a new youth savings account. You take a paid class two evenings a week. Staff have heard, unofficially, that the branch may be absorbed into a regional office next year.
The scene
Nikau: I need someone signing members up until eight, all month. I thought of you.
Saoirse: Sorry to butt in. But isn't this branch folding into regional next year?
Nikau: That's a rumor. I've heard nothing, and members need this program either way.
Saoirse: Extra effort for a branch with no future. You'd skip your class for that?
The two questions
- 1How would you respond to Nikau and to Saoirse?
- 2Tell us about a time you had to decide how much effort to give when the future of the work was uncertain.
What raters look for
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
