Scene to read · Professionalism, Communication

Not an owl

You are the trip leader for a birding club.

You are leading an outing from a wooden hide over the marsh. Chandni, on her second outing, has been quietly playing recorded owl calls from her phone to draw a nesting owl into view, which the club's posted rules forbid because it stresses nesting birds. Samira, a longtime member who birds by ear, has noticed too.

The scene

Samira: That's a recording, not an owl. The rules say playback goes to the committee.

Chandni: I'm so sorry. I saw people do it online. It's off now.

Samira: A quiet word didn't stop the last person. That nest was abandoned.

Chandni: Please don't report me. I only just joined. I'd never come back.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Chandni and Samira?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to deal with someone's mistake yourself or pass it on to others. What did you consider?
