Scene to read · Professionalism, Communication

Behind my back

You work at a downtown visitor information kiosk.

You and Adriana hand out trail maps and bus passes at the kiosk; in slow stretches she revises for her real estate exam on her phone. On a quiet afternoon your manager, Jian, has stopped by and asked you to time her phone use for two weeks without telling her. Adriana comes back from the storeroom and hears the end of it.

The scene

Jian: A cruise passenger complained about staff on a phone here. I need more than a hunch.

Adriana: I only look when nobody's waiting. I've never missed a visitor.

Jian: Maybe so. That's why I asked for a log, not your word or mine.

Adriana: So my deskmate times me behind my back? Would you really do that?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Jian and Adriana?
  2. 2Describe a time you were caught between a supervisor's request and loyalty to a coworker. What did you do?
