Sarcasm at the service counter

You work at the next window of a regional bus terminal service counter, where you hear everything and are authorized to assist any rider.

At a regional bus terminal, Osias, a rider, is upset that the evening services have been cancelled. Ottilie, your colleague at the next window, has started answering him sarcastically. The hall has gone quiet, and you are free to help.

The scene

Osias: Three evening buses cancelled, no notice. How do I get home?

Ottilie: Wonderful, another surprise. Try wishing harder. I can't fix that schedule.

Osias: Don't mock me. I've waited forty minutes. Give me a straight answer.

Ottilie: I've answered five times. Nothing changes if you repeat that question.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in this situation, and why?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it right to step in on how a colleague is handling a member of the public?
